Aspen Updates September 8, 2017

Thank you, parents, for coming to our Back To School/Curriculum Nights.  We appreciate the time you spent learning about your child’s class and their teachers’ expectations.  We look forward to partnering with you throughout the year to help ensure your students success in school.

The bus freeze is officially over on September 11.  If you need to change a bus schedule or if you need to be added to a bus route, please call the office.  It may take a couple days before the change is official, but we are happy to work with you to get the changes made.

MAP testing will begin on Monday, September 11 for students in grades K-5 and will continue through September 22.  Reading will be tested the first week, and then Math.  We give students MAP tests to help us determine your child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year.  MAP tests will be taken as a whole class on laptop computers.  The best way you can help prepare and support your child before MAP testing is to be sure they get a good night’s rest the night before the test and to give them a good breakfast in the morning.

Picture day forms will be sent home on Wednesday, September 13.  Our actual picture day is Wednesday, September 20.  Something new this year is the ability to be able to prepay and order your picture package online up until 9:00 a.m. on the day pictures are actually taken (9/20).  Or you can send in your completed order form the morning of picture day with a check.  Look for those picture day forms in the backpacks on 9/13!

After school enrichment programs that are run by the Vernon Hills Park District will begin next week.  If you are interested in having your child attend CheckMates Chess, Wicked Science-Cool Chemistry, Fun Fluency or Young Rembrandts, please sign up with the Park District, and be sure to send your child with a note EVERY time they attend the after school program.  Those programs run between 6-8 weeks and actually take place in our school, but are taught by Park District personnel.

Our 4th grade students were introduced to band and orchestra instruments during their music classes this week.  Information will be coming home soon inviting parents to a band and orchestra information night where you will get information about our band and orchestra program and can also sign a rental agreement with an instrument company.  Check those book bags for more information!
